While many creams and treatments such as vitamin E claim to have the ability to fade and erase scars, they are usually not very effective. The only way to fade or remove a scar permanently is through the use of laser therapy. Because this treatment requires the use of delicate equipment, it’s important that a trusted medical professional be the one to perform the treatment.

Don’t let scars hide your true appearance. Call our Miami office today at 305-443-3531 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Roudner.

How Laser Scar Removal Can Help

Scars come in different types including keloid, hypertrophic and atrophic. Keloid scars are typically the largest and most noticeable. They extend beyond the original borders of the wound and may even grow over time. Hypertrophic scars are firm and raised but may fade over time. Atrophic scars are pits in the skin and are often associated with severe acne.

Different types of lasers are available for different types of removal. When you meet with Dr. Roudner for your initial consultation, he will examine your scars to determine what type they are and which laser is best suited for their removal. Some types of laser treatment may require multiple sessions.

The Laser Scar Removal Process

The process involved varies depending on the type of laser that will be used in your treatment. Local anesthesia is usually provided as the process would otherwise be painful. The laser is essentially burning away the tissue so that your skin can replace it with new, more natural-looking skin. If the area to be treated is extensive, general anesthesia may be used.

Most scar removal procedures will be performed at our Miami clinic, but Dr. Roudner may choose to perform your treatment at one of Miami’s fine hospital. Some types of laser treatment may require steroid injections or other medications in order to make the laser work more effectively and to help flatten the scar.

If you are treating atrophic scars, your treatment will require the use of a laser that doesn’t burn away the tissue but instead stimulates the production of collagen deep within the skin to fill in the scar and smooth out your skin.

Laser Scar Removal Aftercare

In the days following your laser scar removal treatment, you will need to take special care of the treated area. This includes keeping it clean and bandaged, washing it and applying antibiotic ointment if needed. Dr. Roudner will give you full aftercare instructions. It is very important that you follow these instructions carefully so that your skin heals properly.

If you experience any discomfort following your procedure, talk to Dr. Roudner about over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. Anti-inflammatories may also help to keep any swelling down.

It may take a few days for your skin’s regenerative process to begin. Don’t feel discouraged if you don’t see an immediate change. The speed of your healing will depend on the type of laser that was used, maintenance following the procedure and your own skin. Everyone’s skin heals a little differently.
