One of the first conversations you will have with Dr. Roudner at our Miami surgical center is whether you are a good candidate for laser hair removal. Laser hair removal uses the specific mechanism of selective photothermolysis (SPTL), which uses a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration in order to obtain the optimal effect on a targeted tissue (hair follicle) with minimal effect on surrounding tissue (skin). Light is absorbed by dark objects, by heating the dark hair follicle (melanin) and surrounding stem cells localized damage is isolated, while protecting the rest of the skin.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in their cosmetic national data bank statistic reports of 2014, laser hair removal was performed in 1,112,046 patients that year. That is a 3% increase from 2013 and a 51% increase from 2000.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
One of the first conversations you will have with Dr. Roudner at our Miami clinic is whether you are a good candidate for laser hair removal. In general, the best candidates for laser hair removal have light skin with dark hair. This is because the laser targets the pigmentation in the hair. If your skin is dark, the laser could target the pigmentation in your skin and cause burning.
If you do have darker skin or lighter hair, don’t worry. New laser hair removal procedures are available, and you may be a candidate for one of these. Speak to Dr. Roudner about your concerns during your consultation, and he will help you find the solution that is best for your particular skin and hair type.
Prior to your laser hair removal procedure, you will need to be careful about sun exposure. Avoid excess sun exposure and especially tanning. Even sunless tanning products can cause the laser to target the pigmentation in your skin and cause the risk of a burn. Additionally, in the weeks leading up to your laser hair removal session, do not wax, pluck or use electrolysis to remove hair. The hair follicle needs to be intact for laser hair removal to work properly.
During Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure
Depending on which type of laser is going to be used for your procedure, a cooling gel may be applied to your skin or a cooling device may be used on the tip of the laser wand. Dr. Roudner will hold the tip of the wand to your skin and activate the wand to pass the laser beam into your hair follicle.
The beam damages the follicles but does not destroy them. The damage causes future growth to be inhibited. In some cases, it may stop future growth completely. You may feel a sense of discomfort, or you may simply feel a cool sensation from the gel or the wand.
The length of your procedure will vary greatly depending on the area being treated. A small area, like your lip, will only take a few minutes while a larger area, like the legs or chest, could take an hour or more.
Following Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure
For a few hours immediately following your laser hair removal treatment, some redness and swelling is possible. Ice packs can help to alleviate any discomfort, and Dr. Roudner may recommend the use of over-the-counter anti-inflammatories or lotions to help soothe any irritation. You may also experience some hair shedding in the weeks following your laser hair removal treatment. This is perfectly normal. Follow Dr. Roudner’s instructions for following up.
