Mole Removal

Mole Removal at Our Miami Surgical Center

Moles, or nevi, are removed for a variety of reasons (cosmetic, cancer potential etc.). They are typically removed surgically by excision with closure or cauterization or by shave method. Rarely they maybe treated by laser.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in their cosmetic national data bank statistic reports of 2010, tumor removal (including skin cancer)procedures were performed in 4,042,955 patients that year. That is a 2% increase from 2009.

Dr. Roudner’s surgical goal is to remove the nevi completely if possible in the safest and most aesthetically pleasing manor, as well as obtaining a tissue diagnosis to ensure complete removal and benign nature of the mole while minimizing visible scars.

Dr. Roudner may perform a shave biopsy for minor nevi or when in an aesthetically difficult area to excises or he may perform complete excision when aesthetically pleasing or in need for definite tissue diagnosis.

Before Your Mole Removal Procedure

Mole removal is often done to either remove and biopsy a mole that is suspected of being cancerous or to get rid of a mole that has the potential to become cancerous. For this reason, it’s important for the surgeon to be sure that the mole is completely removed in order to prevent any future health concerns.

If you were referred for mole removal by your general practitioner, Dr. Roudner will consult with your doctor to fully understand your health history and you and your doctor’s concerns about your moles. He will also meet with you at our Miami clinic and discuss any of your concerns about the removal itself in order to make you more comfortable.

The Mole Removal Procedure

When you arrive to our Miami office for your mole removal procedure, our team will prep you for your surgery. We will carefully clean and disinfect the area of your skin surrounding the mole. Dr. Roudner will inject an anesthetic such as lidocaine to numb the area so that you will not feel any pain or discomfort. If required, a sterile drape may be used to isolate the area that is being treated.

Using a scalpel, Dr. Roudner will gently remove the mole and any necessary surrounding tissue. Depending on the amount of tissue being removed, the wound may be daubed with antibiotic ointment and covered with a bandage, or you may require stitches. If the mole removal goes deep, you may need internal stitches that will dissolve on their own; otherwise, standard stitches will be placed on the top layer of the skin. For these stitches, you will need to return to our Miami clinic to have the stitches removed. If necessary, the mole and tissue will be sent to the appropriate lab for biopsy.

Mole Removal Aftercare

Following your removal procedure, Dr. Roudner will give you advice on how to best care for the area. These instructions may include directions for bandage changes and cleaning as well as application of over-the-counter or prescription antibiotic ointment. Dr. Roudner will track your healing to make sure that any scarring is minimal. He will also provide you with tips and products that can help to prevent scarring.

You can expect a phone call or other notification from the lab with the results of your biopsy. Either Dr. Roudner or your general practitioner will need to see you to discuss these results with you — especially if the results reveal that you will need further treatment. Expect to follow up with Dr. Roudner at our Miami clinic so that your progress and healing can be checked and also to remove your stitches if necessary. The timing of this visit will vary depending on the location of the mole removal and what type of stitches were used.
