Preparing for Dermabrasion
Dr. Roudner will examine the area to be treated and determine the type of dermabrasion that will best fit your needs and give you the best result. He will ask you about your expectations and the results that you would like to see from this procedure. It’s important to be up-front and honest about such topics as your age, your health and your skin care routine since these factors will affect the way that your skin heals.
You will be given specific instructions on caring for your skin in the days preceding your dermabrasion treatment. These instructions may include foods and drinks to avoid. Dr. Roudner will go over your medications and supplements with you. You may need to temporarily stop some of your medications. For example, aspirin can cause excess bleeding. If you are on any type of blood thinning medication, it is extremely important that Dr. Roudner is aware of it as this can affect your dermabrasion results.
The Dermabrasion Procedure
Most dermabrasion procedures are performed in our Miami clinic; however, in some cases you may have your procedure done at a nearby Miami hospital. Local anesthesia will be administered to numb the area and make the dermabrasion procedure more comfortable. A sedative may also be used to reduce any anxiety you may feel. If you are requiring extensive dermabrasion over a large area, general anesthesia is a possibility.
Dr. Roudner will use a special instrument that scrapes away the outermost layer of skin. This instrument either uses a small burr-like attachment or a wire brush depending on which type of dermabrasion your treatment requires. Dr. Roudner will carefully remove layers of skin until the scar or other flaw is removed or significantly diminished. He will only remove a safe amount of skin, which means that multiple treatments may be required to completely fix the problem area. Trying to remove too much skin at a time may only increase scarring in the area.
After your dermabrasion is complete, Dr. Roudner will dress the treated area with antibiotic ointment or cream and apply a soothing bandage. Remember that this area is basically an open wound and will require care and good hygiene to ensure that it heals correctly.
Dr. Roudner will give you specific instructions on how to care for your skin following dermabrasion. Follow those instructions carefully. Follow up at our Miami clinic as directed so that Dr. Roudner can check your progress and determine whether you need additional treatments.
