Reasons For Breast Reduction
Women may seek breast reduction surgery for a range of medical reasons, or to address aesthetic concerns. Some issues that breast reduction can address include:
- Back pain, neck pain or shoulder pain due to heavy breasts
- Difficulty exercising or sleeping comfortably
- Skin irritation due to bra straps or skin friction from large breasts
- Large breasts that are out of proportion to a small frame
- Breast asymmetry
Breast reduction surgery can also improve self-esteem for women who are troubled by the look of overly large breasts.
How Does Breast Reduction Surgery Work?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as Reduction Mammaplasty, reduces the size of the breasts by removing excess skin and excess breast tissue. Dr. Tal Roudner also employs breast lift techniques to ensure an aesthetically pleasing result.
Your Breast Reduction Consultation
Begin the process toward breast reduction surgery by scheduling a consultation appointment with Dr. Tal Roudner at our Miami office. During your consultation appointment, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns and your goals for your reduction with Dr. Tal Roudner and learn what we can do to help you. The consultation appointment for breast reduction surgery will involve a thorough medical exam, during which Dr. Tal Roudner may take photographs and measurements of your breasts. He will assess your medical history, overall health, and discuss the benefits and risks of breast reduction surgery with you. If you decide that you are interested in breast reduction surgery, a mammogram/ ultrasound may be necessary prior to confirming your surgery.
Before Your Breast Reduction Surgery
Once you schedule your breast reduction surgery, you will also be scheduled for a pre-operative appointment approximately three to four weeks prior to surgery. It is very important that you attend this appointment and follow all guidelines. Dr. Tal Roudner and his staff will give you specific preoperative instructions. It is critical that you follow each directive to the letter, and contact us immediately with any questions. General pre-surgical protocol includes:
- If you smoke, you must stop 4 weeks before surgery. If you need assistance quitting, please let us know.
- Make arrangements for a friend or family member to drive you to and from surgery and remain with you during the first 24 hours of recovery.
- Do not perform any strenuous activity the day before surgery.
- Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight before surgery.
- Shower or bathe the evening before surgery and do not use any lotions, fragrances or deodorant the evening before or day of surgery.
What to Expect During Your Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is typically an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. The incisions and exact procedure used by Dr. Tal Roudner during your breast reduction will vary depending on the size and shape of your breasts currently, the size and shape you are hoping to achieve, and the placement and size of your nipples and areola. Many breast reductions use an incision that runs under the breast, another that runs up from the underside of the breast to the areola, and then around the areola. It may also be necessary to create a new place for the areola so that it is positioned properly following your breast reduction. Your breast tissue will be positioned with internal dissolving sutures and your incisions will be closed with sutures.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Dr. Tal Roudner requires breast reduction patients to take the week off following surgery to rest. While it may take a few weeks for initial recovery and six weeks to return to full normal activity, it takes from six months to a year for the body to completely adjust to the new breast size and to obtain the final results. You will notice immediately the difference in weight and breast size following your breast reduction. Your breasts will be tightly bandaged when you leave our Miami office. Breast reduction patients typically experience some pain and discomfort after surgery. Dr. Tal Roudner will prescribe pain medication if needed. You will be given post-operative instructions and have follow-up appointments scheduled. It is important to follow all instructions and attend all appointments in order to ensure proper healing and recovery.
Breast Reduction Results
Breast reduction surgery aims to enhance the appearance of the breasts to bring them into proportion with the body, as well as improve self-confidence and overall quality of life. Health issues, such as back and neck pain, may be improved or resolved after the surgery. The excess weight of the breast tissue removed during surgery may improve the ability to lead an active life and take part in physical activities that were previously difficult due to overly large breasts.
Am I A Good Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery may be an option for you if you are suffering from physical or emotional stress due to large, heavy, or pendulous breasts. A consultation with Dr. Tal Roudner is the first step to determining if a breast reduction may be right for you.
In most cases, a breast reduction should be performed once the breasts have fully developed. Some conditions, however, would justify a breast reduction being performed earlier including virginal breast hypertrophy, a condition in which the breast responds to hormonal signals by becoming severely enlarged. It is also generally recommended that patients wait until after they have had children and no longer plan to breastfeed.
Candidates for breast reduction surgery typically:2
- Want to reduce the size of their breasts
- Are in general good health
- Non-smoking, or able to stop smoking 4 weeks before surgery
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
