Reasons for Liposuction

Liposuction can improve the contour, proportion, and shape of specific body areas that are not responsive to proper diet and regular exercise. Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery and should not be considered a substitute for a healthy diet and a reasonable amount of exercise. However, some people find that despite living a healthy lifestyle, they are unable to get rid of fat in certain areas of their bodies. This situation often has a genetic component. For these people, liposuction may be a good solution. Liposuction is one of the top cosmetic procedures in the United States.1

Areas Of Your Body That Can Be Treated With Liposuction

  • Abdomen
  • Love handles
  • Waist
  • Back
  • Upper Arms
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Buttocks
  • Under the chin

HOW DOES LIPOSUCTION WORK?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure aimed at improving body contour and proportion by slimming and reshaping specific areas of the body. The improvements are achieved by removing excess fat deposits.

Dr. Roudner begins with a small incision. Every effort is made to keep these incisions inconspicuous. Surgical techniques vary depending on which type of liposuction procedure you will be receiving:

  • In tumescent liposuction, a sterile injection composed of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine not only lessens pain, but also shrinks the blood vessels. This allows more fat to be removed.
  • In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, the fat is liquefied using sound waves in order to ease the removal.

A tiny stainless steel tube called a cannula is then inserted into the incision. Using the cannula, the fat in the area is gently loosened and dislodged. Once loose, the fat is suctioned out through the cannula using either a large syringe or a suction pump.

PREPARING FOR LIPOSUCTION

The first step is a consultation appointment with Dr. Roudner at his Miami office. This is your opportunity to ask any questions and learn more about your liposuction options. Dr. Roudner will discuss your goals and medical history, as well as the risks and benefits of liposuction.
If you decide to schedule liposuction surgery, you will need to:

  • Stop smoking or using any nicotine products at least 4 weeks prior to the procedure.
  • Discontinue any medications indicated by Dr. Roudner.
  • Have a pre-operative appointment prior to your surgery.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and avoid alcohol in the days before your procedure.
  • Follow all pre-operative instructions closely, such as refraining from eating or drinking after midnight the night before surgery.
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from your procedure and help you get settled for recovery.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE

Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure in the surgical suite at the surgical center or occasionally at the hospital if needed for medical reasons. Liposuction is typically performed with general anesthesia, although local anesthesia and sedation may be used as appropriate for smaller treatment areas. The procedure may last from 30 minutes to up to three hours or more, depending on the number of targeted areas, size of the patient, and the technique used. The incision placement and surgical methods used will depend on your personalized treatment plan and will be discussed with Dr. Roudner at your consultation or pre-surgical appointment.

LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY

You can expect some pain and discomfort in the day or two after surgery. Dr. Roudner will prescribe medication if needed. You will be advised to be mobile and stay hydrated for optimal recovery. You will need to wear special compression garments for several weeks after surgery. Depending on the area being treated, small drains may be required to allow excess blood and fluid to escape. It’s common for bruising, swelling and tenderness to last for several weeks.Dr. Roudner is proud to offer post-surgical lymphatic massage, ultrasound and radiofrequency treatments to speed healing and reduce scar fibrosis.

Most patients are able to return to work at 5 days, depending on their occupation. Gradual exercise can be initiated after three weeks. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your recovery and remove any sutures placed during surgery. It is important to follow any specific instructions from Dr. Roudner and call immediately with any questions or concerns.

LIPOSUCTION RESULTS

Dr. Roudner is highly experienced in natural-looking body contouring with liposuction. You can expect a leaner and more toned appearance once you have healed. Any swelling will gradually improve in the first few weeks to months. The final results can be seen at about six months to a full year after surgery.

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from your body. However, you need to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle following your liposuction in order to keep your newly contoured physique.2

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION?

People that practice regular physical activity and a healthy diet, but still have a body with disproportionate contour due to localized fat deposits are likely good candidates for liposuction procedures. Patients with loose muscles and sagging skin in addition to excess fat deposits may require procedures that involve muscle tightening and skin excision in addition to fat removal, such as tummy tuck surgery. Ideal liposuction candidates are in good general health, have good skin elasticity, and maintain a healthy and consistent body weight. Liposuction is not intended as a solution for obesity and does not remove or reduce the appearance of cellulite.3
