Facial Fillers

Injectable facial fillers make it possible for individuals struggling with visible signs of aging to achieve smooth, youthful appearing skin without the need for invasive plastic surgery. Cosmetic procedures using facial fillers add volume to the skin to sculpt or enhance facial features or eliminate fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging as well as boost the skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin.1

What Are Facial Fillers?

Today the majority of injectable fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, are hypoallergenic, and have a low risk of complications. They are also less painful to inject, far less costly, and last longer. Additionally, the facial fillers in use today have highly predictable results and feel and look completely natural. When dermal filler injections are performed by an experienced healthcare provider such as Dr. Tal Roudner, a youthful, smooth, natural skin appearance should be expected.

Benefits of Facial Fillers

Injectable treatments using dermal fillers have a range of benefits including:

  • Achieve a more youthful appearance
  • Reduce or eliminate the appearance of fine lines, lip lines, marionette lines, wrinkles, and facial creases such as smile lines and nasolabial folds
  • Enhance thin lips, or poorly defined cheekbones, jawline, and chin
  • Improve the appearance of acne scars
  • Fill in temporal hollows and under eye hollows
  • Minimally-invasive procedure
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Little to no downtime
  • Results are long-lasting

Candidates For Facial Filler

Facial filler injections are a cosmetic treatment ideal for healthy patients seeking to address facial wrinkles, depressed scars, or volume augmentation. Patients that are taking medications such as blood thinners may be injected with caution due to an increased possibility of bruising or hematoma (localized collection of blood). Patients with a history of connective tissue disorders should consult with their rheumatologist prior to injections with dermal fillers. Patients with active infections, open wounds, or cancer in the area of proposed treatment are not candidates for facial injections at the time of active disease.

Your Facial Filler Treatment

Facial filler being injected into patient
After preparing the skin at the areas to be injected with alcohol or any other antiseptic solution, the fillers mixed with an anesthetic solution are injected into the mid to deep dermis as well as sub-dermis (hyaluronic acid and calcium Hydroxylapatite) or sub-dermis (poly-L-lactic acid) using small gauge needle. The filler can be placed by serial threading, linear threading, depo placement, or cross-hatching. The area may be gently massaged by Dr. Roudner if needed to obtain smooth distribution.

Facial Filler Results

You can expect an immediate correction of facial wrinkles, depressed scars, or noticeable volume enhancement in the areas treated with hyaluronic acid fillers. Fillers gradually dissolve over a period of 4-24 months depending on the areas treated and the products used.

Patients that are treated with the fillers on a regular schedule will notice a more youthful, elastic, and “shiny” skin over time due to their own collagen production by fibroblasts (cells producing collagen) that are stimulated by the filler injected.

FAQs About Facial Filler Treatment

How long does a facial filler treatment take?

Facial filler treatments can take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour depending on the patient’s unique treatment plan.

How should I prepare for my facial filler treatment?

Patients should avoid all blood thinners for 14 days prior to treatment.

What can facial fillers do for me?

Most commonly soft tissue fillers are used to correct wrinkles, creases, and lines caused by facial expression or aging. They are also used to treat and improve depressed scars (such as acne scars). Aid in facial contour enhancement such as the cheeks and lips and treat dermal atrophy from disease or corticosteroid injections. Results last anywhere from six months to 24 months and can be optimized with an optimal skin care routine.

Is there any recovery time after facial filler injections?

Recovery time after facial filler injections is approximately 5 days for most patients. Some patients may experience mild redness, swelling, and/or bruising at the injection site for up to two weeks.

Can I combine other procedures with facial filler?

Yes, many patients choose to combine facial filler with other non-surgical anti-aging treatments such as Botox. And while according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, facial fillers can delay the need for surgery, they can also be used to enhance cosmetic surgery results from procedures such as facelifts.2

Are facial filler injections painful?

Unless there is some type of complication such as infection or a moderate to severe allergic reaction the recovery period after the procedure should be painless and mild to no discomfort.

Do facial filler injections have any side effects?

Some of the most common side effects of facial filler treatments are bruising and mild discomfort at the injection site.3 The soft tissue fillers’ formulation includes lidocaine to significantly reduce any pain and discomfort during the treatment session. Redness (erythema) and swelling (edema) are common after treatment and typically last a few days. Bruising is less common and may last from days to a few weeks.

Occasionally, palpable nodules can be felt under the skin, which often occurs when the multiple-puncture technique is used or depot injections are performed to place the dermal filler. For this reason, linear threading is now used most commonly, which minimizes the risk of nodules.
