Allergan Textured Breast Implant Recall

Dr. Tal T. Roudner prioritizes the well-being of his patients and he is committed to helping women look and feel their best while adhering to the highest standards of patient safety. You may have heard that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently asked breast implant manufacturer Allergan to recall certain types of implants due to patient safety concerns. Allergan has recalled the following breast implants: All textured Natrelle Saline-Filled breast implants, Natrelle Silicone-Filled breast implants, Natrelle Inspira Silicone-Filled breast implants, and Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled breast implants. The recall does not include smooth surface implants. Dr. Roudner is complying with the recall and will no longer use any of these implants in his breast augmentation procedures.

Why Are Certain Implants Recalled?

The implants that are recalled have been associated with a risk of a very rare illness called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer; it is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that is highly treatable with early detection. The FDA states that the “overall incidence of BIA-ALCL appears to be relatively low,” but since there is data to link cases of BIA-ALCL to these particular implant models, Allergan has agreed to voluntarily recall them. You can read the full FDA statement here.

What Should You Do if You Have Textured Breast Implants?

Dr. Rounder understands that this news can be alarming for women who have had breast augmentation using any of the recalled implants. However, the risk of developing BIA-ALCL is very low. The FDA is not recommending that patients with these implants have them removed if they have not had any issues with them. You should continue to have regular health screenings and monitor your breasts for any changes, such as persistent swelling, pain, tenderness, lump or change in the breast shape. Dr. Tal recommends his breast implants patients to be seen by him on a yearly basis. Patients should not hesitate to reach out to our office if you have any questions about your breast implants.
