Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment

Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, concentrates the healing components of your own blood and returns them to your skin, scalp, or a surgical site. We use PRP to support skin quality, early hair thinning, acne scarring, and recovery after facial surgery. Because it comes from your own body, results look and feel natural.

If you want smoother skin, thicker-looking hair, or a faster recovery after facial surgery, PRP offers a natural way to get there using your body’s own healing resources. Located in Coral Gables, we personally perform every PRP treatment and welcome patients from Miami and throughout South Florida, building your plan around your goals, whether that’s a subtle skin refresh, extra support for hair thinning, or an added boost to surgical recovery.

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-Rich Plasma in medical machinePlatelet-Rich Plasma is the portion of your blood that carries platelets, the cell fragments responsible for clotting and tissue repair. We draw a small sample from your arm and spin it in a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich layer from red blood cells and the rest of the plasma. That concentrated layer is then injected or applied to the treatment area.

Because the material comes entirely from you, nothing foreign enters your body, so there is no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection. PRP falls under the practice of medicine rather than a manufactured pharmaceutical, which is why the skill and protocol of your provider make such a difference in your results.

How Does PRP Work?

Platelets store proteins called growth factors. When platelets are concentrated and delivered into tissue, those growth factors signal nearby cells to repair, build new collagen, and improve local blood supply. The change is gradual rather than immediate, because we are asking your body to remodel tissue over weeks rather than filling a line instantly.

The concentration matters. Our preparation process concentrates platelets to about six times the platelet concentration found naturally in your blood, using a proven two-step spinning method that keeps platelets intact and effective. Not every practice prepares PRP the same way, which is one reason we perform every treatment personally.

What Does the Research Actually Show About PRP?

The research on PRP varies depending on what you are using it for, and we think that is worth knowing before you begin.

For hair, the evidence is encouraging. Studies show PRP can meaningfully increase density in early-stage thinning, with an average increase of about 28 hairs per square centimeter compared with no treatment.

For acne scarring, PRP works best paired with Microneedling, where it nearly triples the odds of significant improvement compared with Microneedling alone.

For overall facial rejuvenation, the evidence is more mixed. In clinical studies, objective improvement is harder to measure objectively than with hair or acne scarring, though patients themselves often notice smoother texture and tone. Because of this, we typically recommend PRP alongside another treatment, like Dermal Fillers or Microneedling, rather than as a stand-alone option for overall rejuvenation.

For surgical recovery, PRP has a clear, specific benefit: it can help speed healing after surgery when added to procedures like facial fat grafting.

We will walk you through what the evidence supports for your specific goals during your consultation, so you know exactly what to expect.

What Can PRP Treat?

We recommend PRP for a focused set of concerns rather than as a solution for everything:

  • Early hair thinning and pattern hair loss
  • Acne scarring, paired with Microneedling
  • Overall skin texture and tone
  • Recovery support after Facelift or Eyelid Surgery

If your primary concern is volume loss or deep static creases, we will usually tell you that Dermal Fillers or BOTOX® will serve you better. PRP improves tissue quality. It does not replace volume.

Am I a Good Candidate for PRP?

confident woman with attractive body on the beachGood candidates are in general good health, have realistic expectations, and are addressing early or moderate concerns rather than advanced ones. PRP works best on tissue that still has capacity to respond, which is why early hair thinning responds better than long-established baldness.

We will likely advise against PRP if you have an active infection or active skin condition in the treatment area, a platelet or bleeding disorder, are on ongoing blood-thinning medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a significantly weakened immune system. A recent or current blood cancer also calls for a different conversation. During your consultation, we review your medications, health history, and goals, then tell you plainly whether PRP is worth your time.

How Should I Prepare for PRP?

Stop blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil for three to five days before your appointment, only if your prescribing physician approves. Arrive hydrated and with clean skin, free of makeup or skincare products in the treatment area.

What Happens During a PRP Treatment?

Most appointments run 45 to 60 minutes. We draw a small blood sample from your arm, then process it while topical numbing cream takes effect on the treatment area. Once the platelet layer is separated, we deliver it by injection, by Microneedling, or by both, depending on your concern.

What Is Recovery Like?

Expect mild redness and some swelling for roughly 24 to 48 hours, and possible pinpoint bruising at injection sites. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Skip intense exercise, saunas, and direct heat for the first day, and wait 24 hours before applying makeup.

Changes appear gradually. Many patients notice early improvement around three to four weeks, with continued change over two to three months as collagen remodels. For hair, allow three to four months before judging results. Many patients complete an initial series of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, then return periodically. Results vary, and we will set expectations specific to your case.

Is PRP Safe?

PRP has a strong safety record, largely because it comes from your own body. A review of controlled trials involving more than 1,100 patients found no serious side effects tied to PRP injection, and because the material is autologous, allergic reaction and rejection are not concerns.

The expected side effects are mild and short-lived: redness, swelling, and occasional bruising at the injection site. In one clinical trial, patients reported no side effects at their 12-month follow-up. Choosing an experienced, board-certified provider who follows sterile technique keeps the risk of infection low.

Combining PRP With Other Treatments

PRP works well on its own, and it also pairs naturally with several of our other treatments. BOTOX® relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines, while PRP improves the quality of the skin around them. Dermal Fillers add volume where tissue has thinned, and PRP supports smoother, healthier-looking skin around the treated area. For patients undergoing Facelift or Eyelid Surgery, we can apply PRP directly to the surgical site to support faster healing. During your consultation, we will recommend a combination approach based on your goals.

Why Choose Dr. Tal for PRP?

Dr. Tal T. Roudner, MD, FACS, is a board-certified plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is Ivy League trained, having completed his general surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania. His plastic surgery residency was at New York-Presbyterian Hospital under Columbia and Cornell, with rotations at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery.

One credential matters unusually much for this particular treatment. Dr. Tal completed an NIH-funded research fellowship in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology at Thomas Jefferson University, where he studied sun damage and advanced skin treatment. PRP is fundamentally a skin and tissue biology treatment. Dr. Tal brings formal research training in exactly that field, which few plastic surgeons offering PRP in Miami can say.

His injectable work has been recognized independently. He received the Most Loved Injector Award from RealSelf in 2017, and he holds Most Compassionate Doctor Awards for 2011, 2012, and 2013. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Miami Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Florida Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. Patients have left 720+ five-star reviews, contributing to a 4.9-star rating across 986+ reviews.

What patients tend to mention most is that Dr. Tal tells them the truth, including when a treatment is not worth it. Learn more about Dr. Tal’s background and training.

What Else Do Patients Ask About PRP?

Cost depends on the treatment area, the delivery method, and how many sessions your plan calls for, so we provide exact pricing during your consultation rather than a generic range that might not apply to you. We also offer payment plan options, and our team will walk you through what is available for your specific treatment plan during your visit. See our Payment Plans page for more.

Most patients start with a series of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Hair restoration often calls for a longer initial series since hair follicles respond more slowly than skin. We build your schedule around your specific concern.

They solve different problems. BOTOX relaxes the muscles that create expression lines. Dermal Fillers add volume where tissue has thinned. PRP does neither. It signals your own tissue to repair and rebuild over time, which makes it a quality treatment rather than a volume or muscle treatment. Many patients combine them.

Yes. We can apply PRP to surgical sites during facial procedures like Facelift or Eyelid Surgery. Because it is added during the same procedure, it requires no extra appointment or separate recovery period of its own.
